They awoke well before dawn, dressing and sneaking back down the corridors to their rooms, parting with a last kiss before leaving to start their separate days. Zorah felt light as she tiptoed down the hall, sliding the panel door open and entering her bunk. She waited a few minutes on her bed, letting the memory of the previous night play through her head before deciding she had waited long enough.

Dropping from the top bunk, she opened the door again and joined the shallow stream of acolytes headed to the courtyard to bathe in the pool. She stripped down and found a place at the water’s edge, cupping the cold water onto her body in the light of the early morning sun. Mist still clung to the edges of the yard, and quiet conversations discussed dreams and Way doctrine theory.

Behind her, Zorah heard a soggy clicking. She turned to find Kwazix, stalking up behind her.

“You smell different, Zorah.” He chittered, removing his robes and kneeling next to her. “I can’t quite place it, but it smells familiar.”

“What do you want?”

“Not much, just curious about your experience in solitude. Where have I smelled that before?”

“Didn’t bother me a bit. Now go away.”

“Your mental fortitude is impressive if you did come out unchanged.” He poured water down his head, the droplets beading over his large, multifaceted eyes. “I don’t believe you though.”

“Ugh. Why’s that?”

“Because you’re weak. And that smell belongs to a fellow student. Curious that it’s strongest between your legs.”

His bug-like face made him impossible to read, but Zorah felt sure he was smug. She poured one final bowl of cold water over herself then stood.

“Mind your own business, or I might curiously smell like Wydge blood.”

Zorah dressed and entered the temple, padding down the stone halls to the main chapel and finding a place on the floor to sit for the morning service. Her heart beat fast and her nerves wound tight. All the beautiful memories of the night before seemed reckless and petty in the shadow of being found so easily. Her worry turned to anger as she thought of Kwazix leering at her, mouthparts clicking and hands wringing. Then her stomach knotted in sudden fear at the thought of the acetic wing.

A large hand on her shoulder shook Zorah from her thoughts.

“Acolyte Zorah,” N’gok’s head dropped down to her level, “you seem quite well rested.”

“Thank you, Instructor N’gok.” She fought to keep her voice steady. “It was good to sleep in a bed again.”

“I imagine it was. I did not sleep so well. Stayed up too late reading, then realized I had misplaced one of my keys. You wouldn’t have happened to have seen it about, would you?”

“I’m afraid not. You might check with the linen keepers, maybe you left it in one of your robes.”

“A fine idea. I suppose I’ll ask them later on. Enjoy the service, acolyte.”

The large, lanky creature continued down the aisle, his long neck swaying with each step. Zorah sensed Mally approaching, and as she turned the girl knelt beside her.
